What is it about a cork that makes me love it so? Seriously. This is not rhetorical. I really want to know? Because I’m obsessed. I don’t even have a Pinterest board of cork art, but I’m still obsessed.
“You’re insane” is a very valid response. Trust me, I know this.
There are just so many amazing projects out there involving these little bad boys, and the temptation is simply too much for my feeble soul to resist. Don’t mention this to my husband. He doesn’t love this quirk of mine, mostly because it leaves every “junk drawer” in our house smelling of vino : )
Exactly why is this a problem?
There really isn’t a brilliant how-to for this project (other than drinking), so I’ll simply share my perspective.
For starters, if there’s one tip I can give you, it’s this: However many corks you think you’ll need for your project—especially if it’s a similar scale to what I’ve done here—triple it, and then triple that.
Seriously. I had an overwhelmingly large box of corks ready-and-waiting to be hot glued to their fate. Yes, hot glue is all I used to adhere them. But once all corks were accounted for, I had barely made a dent. So get your drink on ladies and gents—getcha, getcha drink on.
For my base, I used a thin piece of plywood cut in a circle, measured to the exact size I needed for my space. Why a circle? Because this:
I pulled this image from the galaxy of the inter-webs long before Pinterest was a thing, so sadly, I can’t find the original source to give proper credit. (Sorry brilliant stranger.) Still, this image was my inspo, and that’s why I went with a circle. Mission accomplished.
Here’s one last side-angle look at my piece, for a closer glimpse of the plywood. And now let’s all raise a glass, or four, to the greatest invention ever. Hot glue.
I really hit the lottery with marrying you and having our wonderful family. My wife “forcing” me to drink all that wine in the name of art- I have it rough.
Love the blog. Love the pictures (except the ones that have me in them).
What a great hobby for you Andy! Now what can we do with beer caps!!
Haha. Love it!
I just tossed all mine out… then i see this.
awesome info what a talent in every way
Do you start on the outer edges in from the inside of the circle?
This looks amazing!
A few questions…do you hot glue the corks to the board AND each other? Do you wash the corks first? I’m so impressed you don’t have any weird gaps. How did you manage that when you started from the outside in? Thanks so much! Can’t wait to get started.
